AfDB will provide $ 600 million for the “Ehsaas Program”

ISLAMABAD (APP) – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide US $ 600 million for the “Ehsaas Program” under the Integrated Social Protection Development Program.

Asian Development Bank Country Director Yong Ye called Federal Economic Affairs Minister Omar Ayub Khan at the Islamabad Ministry of Economic Affairs, a press release said on Thursday.

During the meeting, Minister of Economic Affairs Omar Ayub Khan congratulated Mr. Yong Ye on his assumption as Country Director in Pakistan.

Omar Ayub Khan appreciated the management and board of directors of the AfDB for their continued technical and financial support to the government of Pakistan.
The Minister also acknowledged the timely support of the AfDB for the purchase of COVID vaccines.

The Minister reiterated that the government is committed to providing maximum immunization coverage to the eligible population.

The two sides also discussed the mobilization of additional financial resources for a mass vaccination campaign in the country.

The Minister shared the government’s vision and development priorities with the AfDB team. He stressed the importance of an improved road network and digital connectivity which are fundamental for service delivery and economic growth through increased mobility of people, farm-to-market access, trade in goods and services, information exchange and electronic commerce.

The Minister also focused on building the capacity of project executing agencies and staff for effective project implementation.

He insisted on the use of digital tools and satellites for effective monitoring of projects across the country.

Mr. Yong Ye, informed the Minister of AfDB portfolio in Pakistan. The Country Director pointed out that the AfDB has committed to providing US $ 6.3 billion as part of the national operations business plan (2021-2023) in Pakistan.

Currently, 32 projects worth $ 6.4 billion are being implemented in the areas of energy, roads and transport, agriculture and irrigation, urban services, education, health and social protection.

The Country Director further informed that the Bank had recently negotiated a new program with the government of Pakistan to provide US $ 600 million for integrated social protection development.

This program will support the efforts of the GoP to implement the high priorities of its Ehsaas program (social protection and poverty reduction) in a coordinated, coherent and systematic manner. Under this program, institutional capacities for social protection and climate resilience will also be strengthened. In addition, access to primary and secondary education, health services and nutritional supplies will be improved for women (especially mothers), adolescents and children from poor families.

He also reiterated the AfDB’s commitment to continue its technical and financial support to the Government of Pakistan in priority areas.

The Minister of Economic Affairs also chaired a high-level meeting to examine the financing needs for the purchase of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary of EAD, President of NDMA, Director General (Health) of MoNHSR & C, AfDB team and senior government officials.

The minister ordered to ensure an uninterrupted supply of vaccines and identify the funding gap, if any.

The AfDB team congratulated the Minister of Economic Affairs for his proactive approach and his facilitation.
